The answer may be Yes--through music. Allan Bloom, author of "The Closing of the American Mind," wrote, "Rock music has one appeal only, a barbaric appeal, to sexual untutored. . . . Young people know that rock has the beat of sexual intercourse." Another statement: "The heart of rock and roll is the rhythm, which is basically a boogie woogie blues rhythm with an accentuated backbeat, almost always on snare drum." In a growing number of Evangelical church and not uncommonly in Adventist worship services, too, rock rhythms and now rap have become a regular sound. Perhaps we need to discuss not only whether rock and rap music glorify God in the worship service on Sabbath morning but also whether this music is consistent with what the Holy Spirit is trying to do in the life of a Christian the other six days of the week. |
