Too Much of a Good Thing?
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:30:51 AM »
A number of years ago I had two hobbies, one was African Violets and the other Orchids. Nothing wrong with that except I got carried away. These things became almost an obsession. It was truly too much of a good thing.

Has anyone had an experience like that? I don't have that trouble any more. Now its the computer.  :-D

Pastor, your post cracked me up. I mean I really had a chuckle....we humans really have alot to contend with "internally" provoked by external pressures...

Often in my frustration with myself I tend to think I am different then my peers in a negitive light...then someone will expose themself that reminds me...we are all alike....thank you.........I consider myself in good company..if that is okay that I say that???

It seems that it is human nature to overdo it, no matter what it is.  I've had those obsessions before.  As a teenager and young adult it was baseball.  Later it was birding.  Fortunately the Lord has given me enough real world responsibilities, that it's harder to get caught up in these kinds of things.

I think we need to be examining our priorities on a daily basis.  Things that are good in themselves can become stumblingblocks to our spiritual welfare if we become obsessed with them.  It is difficult for humans to achieve balance, but that is what we need.

Grateful for Psalms 32 and Titus 2:10 While it is true that God gives the message from Scripture and SOP. The taste I give to others about the message sells it or kills it, I learn to walk it well & cook it well & eat it myself, before I preach it.  Then the SDA message appeals by His righteousness.

I hear you on this. Yes the Lord has given me real world responsibilities as well, but I still find ways to get my hobby fix. On a positive note, I have used my hobby as a means of meeting like minded others, and have been able to share Christ with them. Met one individual who through a circuitous route was able to help him seal his decision to follow Christ, and join the family of God.

Yes, balance is needed. It is the main reason that I have not abandoned my hobby. My hobby, well my sickness is of aviation, but that is pretty pricey. So in lieu of it I resort to model aviation. Designing, building, and manufacturing for folks. However, the biggest thrill on this earth is to be used by Jesus for the salvation of souls.
