I was baptized by my grandfather who was an SDA missionary for 27 years to the Amazon River in Brazil.  I was quite young at the time, and drifted away from God for many years. Fortunately God found me when I was not seeking Him, and I was truly born again in 1982. Since then, one of my favorite hobbies has been the study of theology with a special interest in Reformation theology. My screen name comes from one of the 5 solas of the Reformation which were:
Sola Fide, Sola Christo, Sola Gratia, Sola Scriptura, and Soli Deo Gloria which translated means "To God Alone be the glory".  Johaan Sebastian Bach used to sign his musical compositions with this phrase.

Really interesting about the 5 solas, Stan, and also about your grandfather.  You would have heard some wonderful stories from him.

Lily,

I am truly blessed with a wonderful heritage. My grandfather was Leo B. Halliwell, and there is a book he wrote called "Light Bearer to the Amazon" that can be read online at this link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=NG_WpGgXGagC&dq=Leo+B.+Halliwell&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=WXiFL87ceY&sig=gnd4HFzfa15IbDs34jTMKh210Wc&hl=en&ei=KzLYSd2GA5CKtAPhhvCtCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6#PPA5,M1
---------------------------------------------------------

This book has wonderful stories of God's miraculous interventions among the people of the Amazon. My Grandpa was famous for his missionary lectures where he rolled out a 27 foot anaconda snakeskin down the aisle of a church. He truly loved the Lord, and did a mighty work for God. I am truly proud of him, and am privileged to have been baptized by him in an outdoor setting in a central California river.

This will be good reading for this weekend, Stan.  That is a wonderful heritage and a special baptism, too.

I am 57 and married to a very fine Christian woman. I was raised by wonderful parents in the central valley of California. Born in Loma Linda, and a medical graduate of LLU, practicing as an internal medicine hospital based physician in Anaheim, California.

I was baptized by my grandfather who was an SDA missionary for 27 years to the Amazon River in Brazil.  I was quite young at the time, and drifted away from God for many years. It has been suggested to me that I remind those who may not remember previous conversations where the subject came up on whether I was an SDA church member or not. Just so there is no misunderstanding, I do have to say that it is still true, that I am not an SDA. It used to come up in conversation all the time in the past, where there was one former member who would remind everyone quite often, and would be critical of the fact that I was allowed to be on this forum. The topic hasn't come up recently, and I don't like to make a big point of it, but I can see how it might help to contextualize my posts to make this clear.

I appreciate very much Pastor O'Ffill allowing me to be on here, and my intent is to honor the rules of the forum and not attack the SDA church. I don't remember any particular posts that would be interpreted that way, but feel free to let me know, and I will apologize.

I respect very much the ministry of Pastor O, and I pray for him and his family. I appreciate very much the continued prayers and support that so many on here have given for my severely disabled wife who is very slowly declining from a severe neurological disease. Your prayers and posts of support have meant a lot to me.

Continue to pray for me, and I will pray for all of you.

God bless everyone on this forum.

Stan, I appreciate the fact that you have come out with this information openly. I recall that some years ago there were some interactions between you and one other member in which he stated that he believed you were not an Adventist, but I don't recall that you ever gave a definate answer.  It has always been my understanding that you preferred not to  have it known. For sure it has never been generally known by the membership that you are not an Adventist, but a former Adventist, and you do not accept some of the foundational beliefs of our church. I feel that in order to have free and open dialog, we need to be open about who we are and "where we are coming from."

Again, thank you for making a statement so that everyone can be clear about this.

I appreciate the input that Stan has added to forum over the time that I've read his thoughtful and informative posts.

I appreciate the framework that this site gives in that is stands for and supports the inspiration of both the Holy Scriptures and the inspirational counsel given in the writings of Ellen G. White.  During my reading of a large number of posts that Stan has presented,(during my tenure on this board).. I've found his post's to be very balanced, thought out, logical and solid.  One of the "concepts" of a forum at this point in the "informational" highway of the internet is to provide "honest dialogue"...

My goal for everyone is to first, have a saving knowledge of Jesus. I believe that I've found that in the truth that is presented in the teachings and doctrines of the SDA church ... but I dont follow the church... I follow Jesus.  I am of the opinion that Stan does also... it is evidenced in the regard in which he holds free ascent to truth. My acceptance of him as a brother in Christ... goes way beyond being a fellow forum poster.

Second, I fully intend to support him in his journey towards a full knowledge of God, whatever path he chooses to discover that for himself. Being able to think for yourself and reason,,,, preeminently gives you the opportunity to fully discover God's truth for yourself thru intense study and personal reflection. I've learned alot and have deepened my understanding of alot of truths on this board via multiple posters (even those that I dont agree with but am forced to fully consider their counterpoint)... and this includes his commentary. (of which I mostly agree with).

Additionally, his extensive exposure to differing viewpoints, given his vocational access, provides a needed counterpoint that deepens the overall cultural significance of this forum.

Otherwise... we could just rename the forum board "Parrot Society".. and buy bird feed.

:)

with kind regards,

Gracevessel

That would explain a lot.  I know your name is Stan and I believe that to be true, but there have been times past that I felt I was conversing with Dale Ratzlaff.

Now I am even more concerned for those young in the faith who have probably been to some of these topics and wondered why all these "Adventists" have been at such odds with each other.

Stan,
That is a wonderful book! I read it many years ago & I believe I still have a copy. Now, I'll have to read it again. I would like to say I appreciate your comments on the forum & the way you uplift Christ. BTW, I have been really busy lately, but I will respond shortly about 1John 1:8 . Let's keep the dialog open. Perhaps one day we will see things alike.

My wife has been happily reading the book from the link, and says she remembers in the early 1960's a missionary from South america that would unroll a 20+ foot anaconda snake skin, and talk about the mission work in South America.

Was that your grandfather ?

I have started reading the book from the link too, he has just been gifted three motors.    It feels like I am there watching.

Grateful for Psalms 32 and Titus 2:10 While it is true that God gives the message from Scripture and SOP. The taste I give to others about the message sells it or kills it, I learn to walk it well & cook it well & eat it myself, before I preach it.  Then the SDA message appeals by His righteousness.

Yes Ed, thanks for asking. My grandpa was famous for rolling that 28 foot anaconda skin down church aisles. I am glad you and your wife are enjoying the book.

     The review of the book stopped at page 35 or 36, in mid phrase.

Since I've been on this forum for a while (and I know I had introduced myself before but can't trace the thread) I decided to announce my return on this thread. This forum has grown with me through many stages in my life and it has been home to me for long. I wonder if Newbie is still here, and Colporteur, I believe Larry is, and of course Pastor.

So nice to be back
