Title: No More Elders?
Post by: sdazeal on September 06, 2013, 09:54:47 PM
I find that some churches in our denomination have decided to take a more "creative" position in the women's ordination controversy. The church I attend no longer has Elders. Instead, they have abolished the office of Elder and replaced it the office of "Pastoral Assistant" which can be of either gender. Another church in the area just boldly ordaines female Elders anyway.
How has your church dealt with this issue?
How does the NAD and some regional conferences get away with thumbing their noses at the GC on this issue?

This sounds very childish to me.  It's sort of like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  "If I can't get my way, I'm going to play the game differently," or something like that.  I don't think they realize how foolish this looks.  And, in their attempts to get around denominational policy, they go contrary to Scripture, in which Paul counsels Titus to ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee.  I think Paul would be shocked, and issue some pointed rebukes.

So Raven, how has your  home church dealt with this issue?

We had a pastor in the past who wanted to ordain female elders and they were voted into office.  Our current pastor is not pushing this issue, and we currently have only male elders.  I'm afraid, though, that only a few of us understand (or care) that the qualifications for elder and for pastor, as outlined in the Bible, are the same.  Therefore, once the door is opened for female elders, there is no logical argument against ordaining women as pastors.  The only way to fix this is to go back to following the Bible, rather than the culture around us.

So, I guess the answer to your question is that we really haven't dealt with it.  Since the church muddied the waters back in the 70's when they started ordaining female elders, it's made it difficult on the local level and often leads to controversy.  We can make our opinions known, and hope that the majority will agree with us.

A fly in the soup by any other name still pollutes the meal.
