Title: Why Not Us?
Post by: Richard OFfill on August 30, 2011, 09:14:11 AM
I was at the Maritime conference Men's Advance (men don't retreat) a couple of weeks ago. The women were invited and they came with their husbands. Why don't the women invite their husbands to the women's retreats?

Men don't retreat, but we sometimes "advance to the rear" as some military leader once ordered.  :-D

Seriously, I think women communicate among themselves somewhat differently, and perhaps more freely when men are not present. Perhaps the ladies on the forum could speak to this.

Then it wouldn't be a women's retreat.  Talks are geared toward women.  Women enjoy visiting with each other, I think, more than guys enjoy visiting with each other.  There are special weekends for couples, some for women.  It's not that often that women get a break from kids, husbands, cooking, diapers, laundry, etc.  Give 'em a break! ha!

Pastor you have been married how long? And how many sisters in law do you have....daughters?  LOL...Some men just hate to be alone even for a week end, some just hate to have the wife stay after church because of meetings etc. they want to retreat to the house asap.....most women would not want their husbands there, because they know how miserable they would be and in the end it they would not make it pleasant for them[like children who do not want to go shopping]....notice how many couples drive separate cars to church....i would think the wives would not mind sitting in on a men's week end....but would the men be comfortable with ladies there and the topics that are often discussed in these meetings....some would and some would not....Larry and Newbie and Tammy are right.....we ladies need a break.....

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I'd a thousand times rather go to a men's retreat and hear their speakers than go to a women's retreat.  I've heard here in Michigan the women are not invited to the men's retreat and I'm bummed about it.   :-P

Maybe I'm the only one, but I don't really want to go off for a weekend and be with a bunch of guys.  I gave that up when I got married.  I keep hearing about male bonding, but I'm more interested in family bonding.  I would not enjoy it as much without the whole family with me.  If they want to have a special meeting for ladies, or the men, during the retreat (or advance, as the case may be  ), that's fine, but I think it's better for families to be together if at all possible.

Actually, I agree with you, Raven.  That's the best of all choices!

I think you have a point Vicki. I don't recall ever wishing I could go to a women's retreat because of the scheduled speakers. In fact I have an audio recording of a very prominent woman preacher who told the ladies at a women's retreat that they can submit to their husbands only because they are equal to their husbands. Of course it is true tht women are not inferior to their husbands, but she went on to say that Abraham submitted to God. He was a friend of God and friends are equals. She further said that in Christ, we are equal with God, therefore we can submit to God. How's that for some twisted theology?
I'm sure that is not typical of what is heard at a women's retreat. What was sad about this is that there were a few ladies from our local church who were there, and they thought the preacher was wonderful.
