Title: Pros and Cons
Post by: Richard OFfill on November 30, 2009, 04:06:46 AM
First let me say that I wish some of our forum sisters would initiate some threads on this topic!

But having said that I would like to invite a conversation on the trends in the culture that have affected women's thinking and way of living in the last forty years or so.

I would invited the discussion to have a 'Pros' and 'Cons' approach.

Oh, dear, haven't I started enough trouble?

Trends.....  of this world are getting worse and worse....  that has lead me to become more and more conservative in terms of what I will say and do.  Even though the external is not important to God, it is important to others that see us.  I try my very best not to be a stumbling block for anyone.

I am really interested in studying the development of women's fashion as it relates to our church, particuplarly the wearing of pants by women. The first women who wore pants were in absolute rebellion against God's principles. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the earliest feminists declared "The Bible and the Church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in the way of women's emancipation." Ellen White was very clear of her condemnation of those who would blur the distinction between men's and women's clothing.

wordkeeper,

the hardest time I have with a big skirt is when I'm mowing the lawn, gardening, roofing, and repairing things, and not to mention zero degree weather as my ankles get soooooo cold.

any suggestions?

I am not an experienced "dress reformer" so I don't have all the answers. But I have been keeping toasty warm with ugg-like boots, warm socks and leggings. With a skirt, you can put on more layers comfortably than with pants. There is no reason for being cold. I wear a little shorter skirt with the boots when I'm needing to be active. I run with my kids, and sit and crawl around on the floor a lot. I wear heavy skirts in the winter so they don't blow around. I've found them to be totally comfortable, convenient and warm and healthful. All the reasons I had for not wearing skirts before have faded as I've actually experienced it.

Wordkeeper....

I love your site and I think it is needed so much today in this society that we live in...

As a newbie this was difficult for me to make the change and I still have some challenges.  What I would like to see are pictures of proper dress in different situations.  You don't have to show faces or anything...  it can be from the side and face turned, or a hat on and head down, etc.

I;d like to see proper dress for working in the garden, riding a horse, riding a bicycle, playing with the children, shoveling snow, mowing the lawn, painting, climbing ladders, prayer night, Sabbath in church, Sabbath afternoon.  This would help so much...

Thanks in advance,
newbie

or on second thought, maybe I need to sit back and relax a bit...  :|

Pastor.."Pros and cons" of what exactly?

Wordkeeper and Newbie. If you were the 'shorter' dress that EGW said we can wear when 'cleaning' the home, with 'pants' underneath, a la the dress reform that we rejected, couldn't you still climb a ladder, ride a horse etc? As for prayer night etc, then typical modest dress would work out. If you ever go on Fb let me know by sending a PM, there's a group there that also posts pictures, it's a sister group to Linda's one.

Yes, Thandi, there are definitely ways to dress appropriate for outdoor work, climbing, horsebackriding, etc, and still be very modest. If each woman who desires to follow God completely will pray about this, and ask God to show her, He will do that! But we need to be willing. Willingness is the key!

I've bought 4 pair of leggings with no feet in them so I'm thinking of using those under the dress/skirt that is of a shorter length.
I was accused recently of trying to look old and win the prize for having the longest dress in church.  And, this was from my sda friend.  But that is okay....  these things do not bother me anymore...

You are not alone, Newbie. I got the prize at our church. Ankle length with matching bloomers underneath for those cold, windy days. It is rather pleasant to be in the minority on an issue such as this because we tend to be a living testimony and constant reminder to those with short dresses that a modest dress can be beautiful and healthful at the same time. One day they will "get it."
